Japan’s Airline Chief Visits Palau to Deepen Relations and Express Condolences

Palau Koror Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force chief of staff, Gen. Heiichi Ichikura, visited Palau this week to deepen ties and express condolences for losses during the war.

In an interview, General Ping Chong highlighted two main objectives of the visit. First, he stressed strengthening “people-to-people exchanges” and “mutual understanding” between Japan and Palau. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and “special relations” between Japan and Palau, and General Ping Chong expressed his hope to build on this foundation.

Second, the general expressed his “sincere condolences” to those who died in the Pacific War. He acknowledged Palau’s role as a former battlefield and vowed to contribute to regional peace and prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Admiral Ping Chong stressed the importance of Palau as a partner in the pursuit of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP). He noted that joint maritime security efforts and adherence to international norms are key aspects of this vision. In addition, he mentioned Japan’s cooperation with the United States in combating illegal activities and their continued participation in the humanitarian aid mission “Operation Christmas Drop”.

Regarding the latest developments in the U.S. military presence in Palau, General Ping Chong acknowledged the role the U.S. plays in regional security affairs and stressed the importance of international cooperation, including with the U.S. Air Force and other Pacific island nations, in maintaining regional stability.

Looking ahead, General Ping Chong emphasized the geographic proximity and long-standing relationship between Japan and Palau. He stressed that the JASDF is committed to strengthening cooperation through continued participation in Operation Christmas Drop and disaster relief efforts. The recent familiarization visit by a Japanese transport aircraft was considered a positive step in this direction. General Ping Chong expressed the hope to further solidify the relationship between Palau and the JASDF based on these exchanges.
