Japan: The Japan Gymnastics Association recently announced that 19-year-old Shoko Miyata, captain of the Japanese rhythmic gymnastics team, withdrew from the team for the 2024 Paris Olympics because she violated the team’s code of conduct by smoking.
According to the Japan Gymnastics Association’s code of ethics, Shoko Miyata returned to Japan on July 18, 2024, after leaving the AS Monaco team training camp to be investigated for allegations of abuse, including alcohol abuse.
The Japan Gymnastics Association also confirmed at a press conference that in the absence of captain Miyata, the Japanese women’s gymnastics team will compete with only four players. Japan Gymnastics Association President Masaru Fujita bowed along with other officials including Miyata’s personal coach Mutsumi Harada, saying, “We deeply apologize for this.”
Coach Harada said that while Miyata’s behavior was careless, she was under a lot of pressure to perform at her highest level. “She spent the day under a lot of pressure,” Harada said in tears. “I ask everyone to understand this.”
The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024, with 10,714 athletes from 206 countries around the world participating in 329 events.
