There have been tense incidents between Japanese and Chinese vessels in disputed areas, particularly the Senkaku Islands (which Beijing calls the Diaoyu Islands) in the East China Sea.
The chain of remote islands has heightened diplomatic tensions and been the site of standoffs between Japanese Coast Guard vessels and Chinese fishing boats.
Tokyo has reported the presence of Chinese coast guard vessels, naval vessels and even a nuclear-powered submarine in the area.
In 2012 and 2017, two Chinese non-military aircraft, a propeller plane and a small drone, intruded into Japanese airspace near the Diaoyu Islands, NHK reported.
Control measures
The Danjo Islands are a group of small islands located in the East China Sea in the Nagasaki region of southern Japan.
Beijing claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, through which trillions of dollars in trade pass each year, although international tribunals have ruled that Beijing’s claims have no legal basis.
China said it had taken “control measures” on Monday against two Philippine Coast Guard vessels that entered waters near the disputed Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea.
The Spratly shoals are located 140 km west of the Philippine island of Palawan and about 1,200 km from Hainan Island, China’s nearest major continent, and several confrontations have occurred around the shoals in recent days.
In recent months, both sides have stationed coast guard vessels near Sabina Island, where the Philippines is concerned China is about to build an artificial island.
