Japanese lawmakers want to align their country’s understanding of unidentified aerial objects with those of its allies after several scares sparked by suspected surveillance operations.
“It is extremely irresponsible for us to sit idly by and do nothing about unknowable facts and turn a blind eye to unidentified threats,” said Koichi Hamada, a member of the group and a former defense minister, before the launch.
To the embarrassment of Japan’s Ministry of Defense, a drone recently intruded into a military facility, leading to unauthorized video of a docked helicopter destroyer going viral on Chinese social media.
Japan’s Defense Ministry said last year that it “strongly speculated” that flying objects spotted over Japan in recent years were surveillance balloons launched by China.
Yoshiharu Asakawa, an opposition lawmaker and core member of the organization, said that in Japan, UFOs have long been regarded as “mysterious things that have nothing to do with politics.”
But if they turn out to be “sophisticated covert weapons or spy drones in disguise, they would pose a significant threat to our nation’s security.”
The U.S. Department of Defense established the All-Area Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in 2022 to investigate UAPs.
Last year, an AARO report listed an area from western Japan to China as a “hotspot” for UAP sightings, based on trends between 1996 and 2023.
Later, a 60-page review ordered by the U.S. Congress concluded that there was no evidence that alien technology existed and that the U.S. government had not tried to hide it from the public.
Japanese lawmakers will push for Japan to establish an agency equivalent to the Pentagon’s AARO and further strengthen BroadCast Unitedligence cooperation with the United States.
Christopher Mellon, a UAP expert and former U.S. BroadCast Unitedligence official, will deliver an online speech to the group on Thursday.
