(Koror, Palau) To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Palau, Japan held a colorful special cultural week.
Although the cultural week takes place annually, this year’s event was particularly significant, with judo masters, kimono instructors and mural artists all coming from Japan to take part in demonstrations, school visits and even community projects.

Judo master promotes healthy habits and discipline
Judo masters Udaka Nae and Yuka Watanabe, both renowned champions of international judo awards, visited schools throughout Palau. Their performances were intended to raise awareness of judo as a beneficial form of exercise that promotes both physical activity and self-discipline. They left Palau on July 19. In a July 16 news interview, they mentioned plans to meet with the Palau Judo Federation.
Kimono instructor shares the history and art of traditional clothing
Yuko Nakajima, a kimono lecturer invited by the Japanese Embassy in Palau, visited several schools during the week. Her lectures showcased the history and artistry of the kimono, and her visit even extended to Angar Elementary School.
Mural artist creates collaborative art piece at airport
Keisuke Miyazaki is an itinerant muralist whose work has traveled across Africa, Latin America and Ukraine. As part of the celebrations, he is creating a large mural at Palau International Airport. “I always work with local children,” Miyazaki said in an interview. Students from local schools are assisting him in the work. Palau will become the eighth country to display his work.
Miyazaki arrived on the island on July 3 and has continued to work on the piece. He expects the mural to be finished by July 25, with an unveiling ceremony planned for the 29th. (By Olkeriil Eoghan Ngirudelsang)
