On August 19, 2024, Ambassador Hiroyuki Orikasa and State Minister His Excellency Gustave Shotaro signed and exchanged a grant project for the reconstruction of the Port Bridge connecting Malakal Island and Koror Island, amounting to 2.793 billion yen (approximately 20 million U.S. dollars).
“Sustainable infrastructure supports a country’s entire people. If properly maintained, it can serve as a symbol of strength for future generations. The Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge and the Meiyuns Causeway are clear examples of this,” Ambassador Orikasa said at the ceremony.
“The project will build a new bridge to replace the existing bridge built in 1979. The new bridge will bring far-reaching benefits to the people of Palau as it will safely connect the country’s only commercial port to the rest of the country. In addition, the project will be designed and implemented with the principle of leaving no one behind. We, as stakeholders in the project, will ensure that the various needs and interests of the Palauan people are represented. As Japanese residents in Palau, we are committed to strengthening Japan-Palau relations. We, the Japanese people, including the approximately 270 Japanese residents in Palau, will continue to work hard to strengthen daily ties between Japan and Palau,” Ambassador Orikasa continued.
After the signing and exchange of notes, the Minister of Public Infrastructure and Industry, His Excellency Charles Obichan, and the Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency in Palau, Mr. Tsunesuke Aoki, signed the grant agreement. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Ambassador Orikasa, Minister Aitaro, the Ambassador of Palau to Japan, His Excellency Peter Adelbai, the Governor of Koror State, His Excellency Eyos Rudimuchi, and the Director of the Koror State Department of Public Works, Mr. Leslie Tweed.
