The third night of the Democratic National Convention will feature two videos produced by TV news veterans that also helped shape the narrative of the Jan. 6 committee hearing.
Melinda Arons, former Nightline Veteran producer James Goldston, Participant Media executive and Hillary Clinton campaign official and former ABC News head, produced the two short films. One is intended to remind viewers of the horrific images of January 6, 2021, and the other will prove that Republican candidate Donald Trump is ready to repeat the “big lie” that the 2020 election was stolen.
The two videos were part of the theme of the third night of the convention, “Fighting for Our Freedom.”
Goldston and Aarons have been tasked with helping the House select committee make its case for Jan. 6 in a series of televised hearings in 2022. They and their team have virtually set up a TV operation inside the halls of Congress, working with the committee’s investigators and lawyers to sift through thousands of hours of footage from the Capitol riot to make a compelling case that Trump and others in his administration committed crimes that day.
Wednesday’s video will not build a legal argument, but will remind viewers and voters of what it was like that day. “We want people to relive the shock we felt when we saw it,” Aarons told The Hollywood Reporter.
The second video will lay out Trump’s stance as he prepares to repeat his “Stop the Election Fraud” effort in the 2020 election, when he argued — unsuccessfully in all court challenges — that he lost simply because of fraud. The video will serve as a call to action to get people out the vote. It will reinforce the message repeated many times during the convention that a potentially close election requires overwhelming turnout from Democrats.
