The Bureau of Land Management (PISLM) extends its heartfelt congratulations to the two winners of the PISLM-sponsored awards at the 35th NGC Caribbean Broadcasting Union Media Awards held in Palencia, Belize.
The event, held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 in Belize, celebrates the outstanding contributions of media professionals in raising awareness and providing insightful coverage of key environmental issues affecting the region, with a focus on land degradation.
PISLM is proud to be a sponsor of the Best Neutral TV Production on Land Degradation Award and the Best Article on Land Degradation Award.
The award for best neutral television production on land degradation went to
Newsroom Guyana’s Neil Marks and Shatanand Anude wrote the story “Why Guyana is spending big to replant its forests”.
The piece highlights how the mining industry has fueled deforestation in Guyana, explaining that approximately 6,470 hectares of forest were cut down in the country last year, much of it due to mining. The piece also features a collaborative project between the Guyana Forestry Commission and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, which aims to reforest approximately 200,000 hectares of forest that have been cut down in recent years for mining and other activities such as agriculture and road construction.
Similarly, the Best Land Degradation Article Award recognized exemplary journalism;
Provides in-depth analysis and convincing arguments for causes, effects, and potential impacts
Remedies for land degradation. The winner is Ramado Lyons of the Jamaica Observer for his article “Plan to save mangroves takes off”.
This article highlights a mangrove restoration project being implemented by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Solutions for Developing Countries (SODECO) in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation at Hales Hall in Clarendon, in partnership with Jamaica Sugar Holdings Limited and a range of other agencies.
PISLM received 6 entries for the Best Terrestrial Television Production Award
Land Degradation – RJR Communications Group submitted three (3) submissions (“LeLe Market Fire”, “Preventing Future Landslides” and “Water Quality Risks”); Great Belize Productions Limited submitted two (2) submissions (“Belize Holds Regional AGM on Land Degradation” and “Maya Land Rights”), and Newsroom Inc Guyana submitted one submission (“Why Guyana Is Spending Big Money to Revegetate Patches in the Forest”).
The organization also received two entries in the category of Best Article on Land Degradation: one from the Jamaica Observer – Print Edition (Plan to Save Mangroves Takes Off) and the other from the RJRGLEANER Communications Group (Double Tragedy).
