(The Jamaica Gleaner) Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced a $25 million reward for anyone who provides credible information leading to the arrest and charging of the perpetrators of Sunday’s fatal attack on Cherry Tree Lane in Clarendon.
Holness told a news conference at the Prime Minister’s Office that through the fund, the government and security forces are providing a channel for citizens to provide information that will help dismantle the 185 remaining gangs in Jamaica.
$6 million has been awarded for information leading to the arrest and charging of the suspects in Sunday’s massacre of eight people, which left at least 10 others injured. Each person could receive a reward of up to $1 million.
Those who provide information leading to the arrest and charging of those who facilitated the shooting will share $5 million, with a maximum of $1.5 million per person.
“We are particularly interested in facilitators and organizers. Those who provide weapons, ammunition, motor vehicles, organizers, make phone calls, make connections,” Holness said.
Additionally, rewards will be paid from a $4 million pool for intelligence leading to the seizure of the guns used in the killings and any information about the networks supplying those weapons.
Holness said $5 million had been set aside for information and intelligence to secure evidence against the gangs involved in the attacks.
In addition, a $5 million reward will be offered to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the criminal gang and its associates, with a maximum reward of $800,000 per person.
This announcement came despite the fact that Crime Stoppers Jamaica, a program run by Jamaica’s private sector organization, showed a slight decrease in the number of reports in 2023 compared to 2022.
Last year, Crime Stoppers Jamaica received 1,134 tips, a 1.2 per cent decrease compared to 2022, according to the Jamaica Economic and Social Survey Report compiled by the Planning Institute of Jamaica.
The program reportedly paid out $10.2 million in incentives, $9.1 million of which was used to purchase guns.
