Cyclist Iúri Leitão became the first Portuguese athlete to win two medals at a single Olympic Games on Saturday, winning gold at Madison alongside compatriot Rui Oliveira, before taking silver at the Paris 2024 Omnium.
After taking silver at Omnium on Thursday, Iúri Leitão joined Rui Oliveira on the podium on Saturday, both winning the Madison stage and leading the Italian team with 55 points. Simone Consonni and Elia Viviani are second with 47 points, and Denmark’s Niklas Larsen and Michael Moerkoev are third with 41 points.
In Portugal’s first ever men’s track cycling event, Iúri Leitão and Rui Oliveira became Olympic champions alongside Carlos Lopes, Rosa Mota, Fernanda Ribeiro, Nélson Évora and Pedro Pichardo, with Iúri equalling the record of two medals but also achieving the feat of becoming Olympic champion in a single edition.
Canoeist Fernando Pimenta failed to win a medal at the Olympics, finishing sixth in the K1 1,000 meters and thus failing to become the first Portuguese to win three medals, a few hours later Iúri Leitão and Rui Oliveira eased the Portuguese’s disappointment, with the first adding two medals in the restricted category to the Olympic champions.
The triumphs of Iúri Leitão and Rui Oliveira at the Paris Madison 2024 set the stage for Portugal’s sixth Olympic title in sport, its first outdoor track and field title and the 32nd podium victory ever for Portugal.
