The main rooms were renovated in 2020 and are located in a separate wing that is contemporary but aesthetically harmonious. This wing, like the rest of the resort, was designed by the family patriarch (a trained architect) and inspired by ancient Sicilian villages. Rooms overlook the surrounding countryside or the courtyard, which features a large swimming pool. The reviewer’s second-floor room was luxuriously, traditionally elegantly decorated, with walls painted boldly Sicilian azure blue and views of wineries and olive groves, as well as the mountains beyond.

In fine weather, breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the ornate 18th-century walled courtyard directly opposite the estate, which houses the more formal dining room and lounge. Given Baglio’s location, it’s no surprise that exquisite, fresh local seafood dominates the à la carte menu, with dishes presented with a Sicilian flair. The Oneto family’s own wines, including the signature Marsala DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) and a variety of Sicilian styles such as Nero d’Avola, can be tasted here or in the wine cellar below the estate.

One of the aims of the passionate and enterprising owners, who produce extra virgin olive oil in addition to wine, is to attract more tourists to western Sicily, which they feel is neglected in favour of other attractions on this culturally rich island. They can certainly be proud of this corner of Sicily and all it has to offer. In addition to the walkable town of Marsala, not far from the resort are the ancient salt pans dotted with historic mills, while at the other end of the elevation lies the medieval hilltop fortress town of Erice, offering stunning sea and coastal views. And if that weren’t enough, Segesta, just 30 minutes from Baglionetto, is home to well-preserved temple ruins from 420 BC and a largely intact 2nd century BC amphitheatre.
