The Metma district administration announced that 1,500 refugees have been moved from the Aulala and Kumar shelters in West Gondar district to the new Aftot shelter.

Regional Administrator Desalegn Moges told VOA that Sudanese refugees who left the Olara shelter and settled on the streets “are trying to convince them to move to new shelters,” he said.

In an email to VOA earlier this week, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said plans were in place to move all refugees from the Awla and Kumar shelters, which are said to pose security concerns, to Aftoon.

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission issued a statement on the refugee transfer on Friday, praising the decision and calling on the Ethiopian government to strengthen security in the shelter.
