– We felt we had to move because our development was no longer making progress, says art director Axel Mörner.
The Kiwi Arts Center now has a larger play area in the hilly, leafy natural setting surrounding the Royal Estate. But building the new sculpture park will take time, as permission needs to be obtained from the County Administrative Board to place the works.
So this summer, process work took center stage, with Gunnel Pettersson’s “Field Walk – How do I grasp my place on the Earth?”
With the help of a farmer, the artist planted 0.8 hectares of buckwheat, an herb with white-pink flowers and heart-shaped leaves that was once known as the “poor man’s seed.”
She will perform with three dancers at the opening of the new Kivik Arts Center next Sunday to bring the venue to life.

– We are trying to express our love for this place, says Gunnel Pettersson.
Visitors can stroll through the fields, where paths have been built between the plants. Later this summer, there will be impromptu music sessions in the fields, and even during harvest time, visitors are welcome to join in.
Axel Mörner believes that Svabesholm offers new opportunities, not only with more flexible opening hours, but also in the long term with the possibility of staging exhibitions in the indoor halls all year round.
The actual relocation of the artwork from Bogdala will be done in phases. The exhibition locations have been determined and visitors can wander around the area and engage with the work by reading the QR code at each location on their phones.
But what about staying in the 18-meter-high tower in Bagdala?

Ulf Lundell, who lives next door, wanted it removed because he believed visitors to the tower could access his land, but after several rounds of legal proceedings, the Land and Environment Supreme Court decided to keep the provision in place.
Creator Antony Gormley believes the artwork is site-specific and should therefore remain, so the entire sculpture park, except for the tower, could be moved. But Axel Mohner stressed that nothing has been confirmed yet.
– The artist wants it to remain. We are not unfamiliar with this, since it is possible to have satellites.

The center is open 2007 at Bergdala Farm outside Kivik, Sune Nordgren’s first decade as artistic director.
The center is at the interface between sculpture, architecture and nature.
Starting this year A new sculpture park is being created at the royal estate of Svabesholm near Svinaberga.
