Issa Hayatou, long-time president of the Confederation of African Football, has died at the age of 77.
The Cameroonian served as president of the continental governing body for 29 years, becoming president in 1988 and stepping down in 2017.
He also held senior positions within world governing body FIFA.
Hayatou served as a member of the FIFA Executive Committee (now the FIFA Council) from 1990 to 2017.
He briefly served Acting President of FIFA From 2015 to 2016, after Sepp Blatter was suspended.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino paid tribute to Hayatou, who was a track and field athlete and basketball player in his youth, in a post on Instagram.
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Issa Hayatou, former president of the Confederation of African Football, former interim president of FIFA, vice-president of FIFA and member of the FIFA Council,” Infantino wrote.
“A passionate sports fan, he dedicated his life to sports administration.
“On behalf of FIFA, I extend my condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and everyone who knew him. May he rest in peace.”

Sanctions are Overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport February of the following year.
