Hezbollah launches hundreds of rockets and drones The Israeli military said the strike on Lebanon was intended to prevent a larger attack.

This was one of the biggest clashes in the border war in more than a dozen months.

The Iran-backed Lebanese militia claimed it had fired 320 Katyusha rockets at Israel, hitting 11 military targets, in the first phase of a retaliation operation against Israel for the assassination of senior commander Fuad Shukr last month.

The Israeli military said it thwarted a larger attack with a preemptive airstrike after judging that Hezbollah was preparing to launch a fierce attack, sending 100 warplanes to attack more than 40 Hezbollah launch sites in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli military said the strike destroyed thousands of launchers and was aimed mainly at northern Israel but also at some central areas.

Immediately after Hamas gunmen attacked Israel on October 7, Hezbollah launched missiles into Israel.

Since then, Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in a constant exchange of fire, but both sides have managed to avoid escalation as fighting spreads to the southern Gaza Strip.
