This week, the Government of Israel, through its Office in New Zealand, announced that it will roll out its award-winning domestic biogas systems to homes in “Atata Si’i”, a community relocated to the west side of Tongatapu Island following the devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami in 2022. The partnership is being implemented by MASHAV, Pacific Grow and the MORDI Tonga Trust.
“We are pleased to see our joint project with the Tongan government and the MORDI Tonga Trust Fund come to fruition,” the Israeli office said in a media statement. “The implementation of Israeli climate technologies aims to increase Tonga’s productivity, conserve resources and strengthen its resilience to climate change.”
A home biogas system is an off-grid renewable energy device that efficiently converts household or farm waste into useful products such as clean cooking gas and organic fertilizer for crops.

“We are fortunate that Mr. Guy Jakobi, Managing Director of Pacific Grow, trained our staff and community members on the installation of the system. We look forward to the system providing organic fertilizer and clean cooking gas,” MORDI Tonga Trust said in a media statement.
Last month, during a visit to Tonga, Ambassador Ran Yaakoby, on behalf of the Israeli Embassy in New Zealand, in partnership with the Milstein Foundation and MASHAV, donated laptops to St. Andrews High School. “These computers will provide young students with the opportunity to acquire new skills and enjoy a creative learning process,” the Ambassador said.

Following the eruption and tsunami of the Honga Haupai volcano in Tonga 2022, MASHAV Israel and the Embassy of Israel in Australia have delivered humanitarian supplies to Tonga to help those recovering from the recent tsunami. These supplies include first aid kits and state-of-the-art drones to ensure that even those without normal access can get help. This work is being facilitated by the Australian Government as part of Tonga Aid Operation 2022.
