An Israeli airstrike on a school building in Gaza has killed more than 60 people, according to Hamas-controlled authorities.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that al-Taba’een school was being used as a military facility by Hamas and Islamic Jihad and that there were about 20 militants around the building.

The local health ministry reported more than 60 deaths and 47 injuries. Israel has targeted several similar shelters in Gaza in recent weeks.

Witnesses said the attack took place during dawn prayers because the building is also a mosque. The death toll from Saturday’s dawn attack was the highest in recent years.

The targeting of schools has become an increasingly common operation for the IDF, which claims it is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle Hamas military outposts. Since the beginning of July, more than a dozen schools have been targeted, and the IDF has been claiming that Hamas uses them as command centers to plan and execute attacks, a claim Hamas denies.

The United Nations reported that as of July, 477 of Gaza’s 564 school buildings had been directly hit or damaged, with many more hit since then.
