Jerusalem, July 21, 2024. The Israeli military said it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, hours after Israeli warplanes struck several Houthi targets in the Arabian Peninsula country, according to a press release.

The Israeli airstrikes, in response to a deadly Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv, were the first in Israel’s nine-month war with Hamas to respond to repeated Houthi attacks. As Israel battles numerous Iranian proxies in the region, the outbreak of violence between distant enemies threatens to open a new front.

The Israeli military confirmed late Saturday that it had launched an airstrike on the western Yemeni port city of Hodeidah, a Houthi stronghold and a key entry point for aid and other supplies. The statement said the strike was carried out by dozens of aircraft, including U.S.-made F-15 and F-35 fighter jets, in response to hundreds of Houthi attacks.

Yemen’s Health Ministry said the Israeli airstrikes killed six people and wounded 83, many of them with severe burns from fire. In a statement shared by the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, the ministry said three others were missing.
