Grandi said he hoped to also receive funding commitments for the UN refugee agency, which currently faces a $400 million funding gap for 2023. He said there was “significant uncertainty” about how much UNHCR donors, including the United States and Germany, would be able to provide in 2024.
In an interview before the forum, Grandi said that faced with the influx of refugees, many Western politicians had become less welcoming to them.
He said on Wednesday that refugee-hosting countries should not be taken for granted.
“We have to remember that the majority of refugees – 75 per cent to be exact – are hosted by low- and middle-income countries, which are often already struggling to feed and care for their own citizens,” he said.
