Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump wondered at his annual conference whether his Democratic rival Kamala Harris was “black.” Trump spoke at the nation’s largest annual gathering of black journalists on Wednesday. “Is she Indian or is she black?” he asked Harris, prompting jeers from the roughly 1,000 attendees.
“She starts out as an Indian and then all of a sudden she’s black,” Trump said. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the incident during a media interview later Wednesday. “As a black woman, I find the comments you just read to me insulting,” Jean-Pierre said, adding, “regardless of the color of her skin, we have to respect Harris because she is currently our vice president.”
