Sustainable intensification: Is it possible to intensify agricultural production in dryland areas?
We outline three principles for conceptualizing sustainable intensification in dryland systems. In doing so, we recognize the multiple functions of agriculture for development, including contributions to food security and environmental services, in addition to more traditional goals such as economic growth and poverty reduction. Unless this broader, multidimensional understanding guides dryland intensification efforts, recognizing that intensification in drylands will be very different from so-called “high potential” areas, there is little hope that intensification will be sustainable.
