– President Ali announced and outlined the Shade House Program and infrastructure upgrade plans
President Dr. Irfan Ali announced that about $42 million will be allocated to Monkey Hill, a hinterland community in Potaro-Siparuni (Region VIII), to help local village authorities implement various large-scale development schemes.
The Head of State, who met with residents during a community event on Wednesday, revealed that $15 million had been allocated to help the community build a village mechanics workshop, while a further $12 million was allocated to support the construction of a multi-purpose facility.
Meanwhile, about $5 million will go toward building an arts and women’s center, and another $5 million each will go toward a block-making project and a shade house.
“In this community, there is a huge opportunity to thrive,” the president said, adding, “We must invest in what is called climate-smart agriculture in this community, involving young people, investing in short-cycle crops that will bring more income to the community and the region.”
He noted that the Ministry of Agriculture will support local farmers in growing short-cycle crops and provide markets to ensure that income is returned to the community.
He noted that the government will continue to provide the necessary resources to support the community’s economy.
President Ali further reviewed the tremendous achievements made by the interior communities over the past four years.
He stressed that the government has invested nearly $600 million in the community alone.
“If you look at the impact these expenditures have on your communities and the opportunities these investments create in your communities, you’ll see that we are able to work with you on projects that have a direct impact on you.”
At the same time, he noted that to further promote job creation, the government will seek to establish a program to support young people who want to join the military, police or health professions to receive training.
“We want to talk to the community about getting some rural officers sworn in so they can work alongside the police, we want to work with the community to identify people who might want to join the military and police forces so we can get your information and help you get trained.”
In addition, the Government will support infrastructure improvements by allocating additional resources to assist in the repair of several key bridges.
“I’m telling you right now, we’re going to provide you with some additional resources under the Department of Public Works. We’re going to provide funding to complete three important bridges in your community. You do it yourself, and we’re going to provide you with resources so you can create jobs in your community.”
He further noted that with the government’s continued support, the community was able to build a new village office, equip a guest house and implement many other projects over the past four years.
He noted that the funding comes from presidential appropriations, the state’s sale of carbon emission allowances and supplemental budget funds.
He noted that the government was able to allocate additional funds in the budget to promote the development of the hinterland. He further mentioned that the government has allocated about $10 million for this purpose. The government also allocated a supplementary budget of $5 million to improve the community.
