Speaking in Brisbane, Peter Dutton responded to the government’s aviation announcement, criticising its relationship with former Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce and the cost of living crisis.

“Don’t forget the friendship, a very close friendship, between Alan Joyce and Anthony Albanese, which reduced competition,” Mr Dutton said of the transport minister’s rebuffed offer to negotiate with Qatar Airways for expanded routes to Australia.

“Less competition means higher prices and unfortunately Australians are getting more expensive to fly and we should have more competition.”

“With more consumers wanting to buy flights, consumers should be paying less than they have been under the Albanese government, which has seen prices rise.”

Dutton came to the Brisbane electorate of Ryan to support the campaign of Liberal National Party candidate Maggie Forrest, who is trying to unseat first-term incumbent Elizabeth Watson-Brown.

Watson-Brown won the seat for the Greens at the 2022 federal election, defeating the Liberal National Party by 8.7 per cent.

Mr Dutton took the opportunity to attack the Greens’ policy platform, saying it was out of touch with the concerns of Brisbane voters.

“The Greens are advocating for the abolition of private health insurance, which will destroy our public system and send the cost of private health insurance through the roof for families,” Mr Dutton said. “They also want to legalise hard drugs, which will only send crime rates soaring.”

The Green Party’s policy platform seeks to abolish private health insurance rebates and legalise marijuana but decriminalise other drugs.
