On December 2, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 64/35, declaring August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site on August 29, 1991.
