14 August 2024 (Geneva) – Delegations from the African Union, the United Nations, Egypt and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have arrived in Geneva for talks aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan, despite the Sudanese army’s refusal to participate, US envoy Tom Perillo announced on Tuesday.
“The international community is coming together to help the Sudanese people in Switzerland,” Perillo said on X (formerly Twitter), stressing the urgency of the situation. “We will continue our intense diplomatic efforts. Now is the time for peace.”
The talks are due to begin on Wednesday, with Perillo stressing his commitment to supporting the Sudanese people through the crisis. He confirmed the arrival of key figures, including the Chair of the African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan, Mohamed ibn Chambas, UN Special Envoy Ramtane Lamamra, the Egyptian delegation and the RSF delegation.
The absence of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) remains a concern. “Our U.S. delegation, along with international partners, technical experts and Sudanese civil society, are still waiting for the SAF. The world is watching,” Perillo said.
The Sudanese government rejected the talks, demanding the implementation of a previous humanitarian agreement with the RSF and objecting to the UAE’s attendance as an observer.
Saudi Arabia is expected to attend the talks as a co-host, while the United Arab Emirates has been invited as an observer. Perillo did not announce the arrival of the two delegations.
The conference, co-hosted by Switzerland, aims to address Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, which has been exacerbated by ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Security Forces.
