Interior minister calls for greater respect for media after swearing in ban

Tonight, the Minister of the Interior joined his Cabinet colleagues in calling for more respect for the media. On Tuesday, the media was unable to witness the swearing-in of representatives of the Eastern Region of Toledo inside the Belmopan Government House. Journalists were forced to wait outside during the event due to the protocols set by the Governor. Since then, the two government ministers have called for a change in the rules and for greater respect for the media. This call was echoed today by Moussa.

Interior Minister Karim Moussa: “I don’t understand why the media would be barred from attending such a very special occasion as Dr. Martinez’s swearing-in. I don’t know why and I hope it doesn’t become the norm. This is actually my first time attending a swearing-in ceremony like this so I don’t know the protocol but the fact is now I hear the media is usually inside and like I said, this is a special occasion for Dr. Martinez. He ended up having to come out and do an interview on the curb which I thought was not appropriate and it would have been better to do the interview inside and have the media capture and document this very special moment for him and his family.”

This is not the first time the media has been excluded from major national events.
