The Sri Lanka Railway Station Owners Union is set to embark on a number of union activities starting tonight (June 14).
One of the focuses of their protest is the issue of recruitment.
The decision not to issue tickets tonight is part of a trend among unions in their planned actions.
This means passengers will travel without tickets, the railway sector will suffer revenue loss, and the sending and receiving of parcels will be disrupted.
Their duties include managing the railways and its employees, accepting and distributing parcels, issuing tickets and providing revenue reports to the railways, said Sumedha Somarathna, president of the union.
He added that a final decision on the union action would be made tonight.
The alliance’s general secretary Sanjaya Jayasundera said they have demanded a written reply to their grievances by 2 pm today.
Although locomotive drivers, dispatchers, station masters and operations managers belong to the same grade, the cabinet has approved a special document to provide for promotion of locomotive drivers, dispatchers and operations managers every five years. The station masters have demanded that they also get the same promotion frequency, adding that the current promotion frequency of every 10 years is unfair to them.
He further said that there are a total of 1,372 posts in the railway sector, but only 900 posts are filled so far; in the next two years, this number is likely to fall further and the union hopes that these vacancies can be filled up as soon as possible.
