– President Ali says government will invest billions to improve lives and livelihoods
Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali says his country has invested billions of dollars in interior communities over the past four years to improve the lives of its citizens.
“If you look at the impact and opportunities these investments have in your communities, you will see that we are able to work with you on projects,” the head of state told hundreds of Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) residents during a recent community event.
In Monkey Mountain, President Ali said funds had been provided to help the community build a village mechanics workshop, while $12 million had been provided to support the construction of a multi-purpose facility.
Meanwhile, about $5 million will go toward building an arts and women’s center, and another $5 million will go toward block-making projects and shade house construction.
“There is tremendous opportunity to build prosperity in this community,” the president said.
These investments total US$42 million. President Ali further reviewed the tremendous achievements made by the inland communities over the past four years.
He stressed that the government has invested nearly $600 million in the community.
The Head of State also visited the Kuruka Baru community and revealed that the government intends to invest $80 million.
“We have to make sure we work together. Every community, every citizen, every family, every corner of our country is impacted by development as we build this new Guyana. That is why we are traveling across the country so that we can communicate with you,” President Ali said.
He further stressed that Government has invested in communities across Guyana, including Amerindian communities, to restore lost jobs and create livelihood opportunities.
“Over the past four years, our government has invested significantly in your communities,” President Ali said.
He noted that the Department of Indian Affairs has invested $669 million, the Department of Education has invested about $89 million, the Guyana Energy Agency has invested nearly $54 million, the Department of Health has invested $47 million and the Department of Agriculture has invested nearly $18.5 million.
The Ministry of Human Services and Social Protection invested an additional $50 million, the Ministry of Public Works invested more than $90 million, and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports invested $45 million.
He noted that these investments have accumulated to billions of dollars and the government has built a high-speed internet facility in Kuruka Baru, purchased all-terrain vehicles for cattle breeding projects, and established a sewing center.
He said the money would come from a presidential appropriation, the state’s sale of carbon credits and supplemental budget funds.
He noted that the government was able to allocate additional funds in the budget to promote the development of the hinterland.
