JAKARTA: The Rakiraki volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted twice on Saturday (June 29), with thick dark clouds appearing in the sky, the volcanology department said.
According to a statement from Indonesia’s volcanology agency, the first eruption occurred at 11:04 a.m. local time and lasted nearly 11 minutes.
The second eruption occurred at 2:41 p.m. and lasted more than 10 minutes, with volcanic material erupting 900 meters above the crater.
“Residents and tourists around Mount Kiraki in Levoto are prohibited from carrying out any activities within a three-kilometre radius of the eruption centre,” the agency said.
The volcano on the popular tourist island of Flores had several major eruptions in January, prompting authorities to raise the alert to the highest level and evacuate at least 2,000 residents.
The volcano is currently at alert level 2.
Indonesia is an archipelago country that is prone to frequent volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a region with high volcanic and seismic activity.
Last December, an eruption at Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, killed at least 24 climbers, most of them university students.
In May, heavy rains pushed volcanic material from Mount Marapi into residential areas, sweeping away homes and killing more than 60 people.
