JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said Indonesia is continuously working to promote the reform agenda of United Nations institutions, especially the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
“To date, Indonesia has long never stopped its efforts to promote reforms in the United Nations, especially the UN Security Council,” he told a news conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Reform of the UN Security Council is considered more important because only this body has the power to make decisions, and member states must implement them.
However, Iqbal pointed out that the challenges facing the current UN reform are rooted in the lack of consensus on a reform system that is accepted by all UN member states.
He commented: “Some people have proposed (changing) the veto power, others have proposed granting it permanent or semi-permanent statehood, and so on.”
The spokesman also noted that Indonesia was one of the first countries to call for UN reform, as stated in President Sukarno’s speech entitled “Rebuilding the World” at the UN General Assembly on September 30, 1960.

In his speech, Sukarno stressed the importance of the United Nations developing in accordance with the realities of the times, one of which was his push for a review of the functions of the UN Security Council.
The speech archive will also be recognized as a Memory of the World by UNESCO in 2023.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres previously acknowledged that UN member states have made reforms to the international organization at the 78th UN General Assembly in October 2023.
He noted that several leaders criticized the state of existing multilateral institutions. He said leaders also highlighted the mismatch between global governance institutions and the world’s economic and political realities.
