Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomes G20 leaders and delegates as they arrive for the G20 Summit at Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. As the leaders arrived one by one, PM Modi greeted them with the Konark from Odisha in the background.
The Konark Wheel was built in the 13th century during the reign of King Narasimha Deva I. The wheel has 24 spokes and has been transformed into the Indian national flag, reflecting India’s ancient wisdom, advanced civilization and architectural excellence.
The Konark Wheel’s spinning motion symbolizes time, Kalachakra, and progress and continuous change. It is a powerful symbol of the Wheel of Democracy, reflecting the resilience of democratic ideals and the commitment to social progress.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and World Bank President Ajay Banga were among the first leaders to arrive at the Mandapam venue in India, which is hosting the G20 summit due to be held today and tomorrow, which has been divided over the Russia-Ukraine war.
Leaders arriving in the capital yesterday included US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
More than 30 heads of state and senior officials from the EU and invited guest countries, as well as heads of 14 international organizations attended the summit.
At around 10:30 a.m., the first meeting of the G20 summit, “One Planet”, will be held. “One Planet” will be one of the main discussion topics of the G20 Leaders’ Summit. This meeting will focus on accelerating climate action by increasing mitigation measures and strengthening the global net zero emissions agenda as soon as possible.
This year’s G20 summit, chaired by India, has a theme of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Planet, One Family, One Future”, inspired by the ancient Sanskrit Upanishads. Essentially, the theme affirms the value of all life – human, animal, plant and micro-organism – and their interconnectedness on Earth and in the wider universe.
After the One Planet session, after lunch, another One Family session of the summit will be held at 3 pm. At around 7 pm, President Draupadi Murmu will host a dinner. In addition to foreign representatives, MPs and ministers from the current cabinet, the G20 summit dinner will also be attended by some of the country’s former senior leaders.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend this weekend’s summit. However, Chinese Premier Li Qiang will represent China at the summit. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia at the summit.
