India has announced plans to develop community infrastructure projects in the Marshall Islands. The plan includes the construction of a community sports center, an airport terminal and two community centers. A memorandum of understanding was signed on Monday as part of India’s annual assistance.
“These projects will provide better infrastructure for the people of the Marshall Islands. India recognises the priorities and needs of the Pacific Island nations,” said Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar at the signing ceremony.
India is also meeting the healthcare needs of the Marshall Islands by providing desalination and dialysis equipment. Dr. Jaishankar highlighted areas of collaboration, including healthcare, education and clean water facilities, as part of India’s broader strategy to enhance cooperation with Indo-Pacific countries.
“India is always ready to collaborate more with our Indo-Pacific partners,” Dr Jaishankar said.
India’s engagement with the Pacific region has been strengthened by the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation meeting, which is attended by leaders of 14 Pacific nations. Last year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced several projects in the region during his visit to Papua New Guinea.
India’s growing support for the Pacific comes at the same time as China’s influence in the region grows through loans, grants and investments.
