Rajesh, an electrocardiographer from Visakhapatnam, was ecstatic when he boarded a plane to Thailand to work as a data entry clerk. Back in India, the 31-year-old father’s salary of Rs 20,000 was not enough to feed his growing family, and the promised salary of Rs 70,000 was a lifeline. But once he checked into the hotel, all hell broke loose. A man grabbed him from behind, tied his arms, and muffled his screams with a handkerchief. When he woke up, he found himself in an area controlled by Myanmar rebels.
Rajesh did find a new job, but it was nothing like he imagined. He was sold to a scam call center and forced to defraud other Indians online.
“Save me, Dad, save me,” he cried on the phone two days after he was kidnapped in February. That was the last time his family heard from him. According to his family and the police, Rajesh had been beaten, tortured, starved and held in solitary confinement. He had become a “cyber slave.”
