However, we can only hope that both of them will succeed in overcoming the first hurdle and thus – taking advantage of the whim of the draw – guarantee that we will still be interested in the quarter-finals.

It felt like he was a three-time Olympic champion and I was an Olympic rookie – Siraj began his painful assessment. – He surpassed me in every aspect of fencing, both technically and physically. I sat in his parades and promotions, and it was as if he read me like a book. I am so shocked by what happened, I can’t even really comprehend it, and I’m not even disappointed right now. I came here with the intention of defending my title, but I definitely had a good chance to get another medal, and I’m so sorry that it didn’t turn out like that. How did I feel that I could turn things around? Six to four, yes. And then, the tusks were no longer one, but three. If this action had turned out differently, maybe the whole story would have been reversed. But you can’t hold up a single move: not knowing that last time you were beaten so well, it was a completely well-deserved success.
