A special education institution in Zala County will open on September 1. Budapest Schools’ newest microschool, BPS Zala, was conceived by three local parents and then realized in just ten months in the Csáford district of Zalaszentgró.

Péter Perecz, Viktória Kissné Facskó and Bartus Babett wanted to offer local parents an alternative to the traditional school model, as only churches and state institutions operated within 30 kilometers of the Zara Valley. As a first step to implement this idea, they looked for educational models, and after finding the approach of the Budapest school, they evaluated the needs and ideas of local people in a parent forum.

According to Péter Perecz, their concept soon became popular not only among the people of Zalaszentgrót, but also in other settlements in the region.

We have noticed that parents are planning ahead and we have people coming to our forums whose children are not yet old enough to go to school but who want them to come to us later.

– said Bartus Babett, who also revealed that the details of the model were presented to them by Balázs Pados, a member of the Budapest School Board, and Ágnes Kökényesi, the manager of the local micro-school, who gave them the foundation’s experience. The operation of BPS Zala is made possible with the support of the Csáfordért Foundation and donations from parents.

Creativity and emotional safety are at the core

The teaching method of Budapest schools is based on so-called project-based education. Here, students do not study different subjects independently of each other. – Do their best – Teachers coordinate classes based on a co-created curriculum.

BPS Zala’s educational model is based on creativity and emotional safety. Children learn in a way that fosters curiosity rather than anxiety.

Peter Peretz stressed.

The institution currently has 7 students enrolled, including first-year, second-year and third-year students. They will study in mixed groups with coaches prepared for this model. Next year, seven more students will come to them, and they will be able to take a total of twenty-four children, but according to the plan, over the years they will expand to an educational center with a capacity of eighty people.
