American News, New York, NY, July 17, 2024: Grand Bahama Island is preparing to significantly increase tourist flights this fall, continuing an upward trend in tourism that has 2024 already tipped to be a year of growth. The expansion comes on top of a record 2023, when the island saw a 33% increase in foreign air arrivals, the highest increase of any island in the Bahamas.
A new airlift is arriving soon to Grand Bahama Island.
Starting in late August, Westernair will launch new routes between Fort Lauderdale and Freeport. This will meet the growing demand for travel in South Florida. Bahamasair will also enhance its Fort Lauderdale to Freeport route from September 6 to October 3, 2024. This will ensure continued air traffic during the period when American Airlines temporarily suspends its Miami-Freeport route due to the peak of the hurricane season.
American will resume daily flights to Freeport on October 3. As a result, flights from Miami will increase to twice daily in November, while a new Saturday flight from Charlotte will also be introduced.
Bahamasair will launch new service between West Palm Beach and Freeport on November 17, 2024. Flights will be further increased during the Thanksgiving holiday. This service is in addition to the existing twice-weekly nonstop service between Orlando and Freeport. The flight was launched on June 17 and will run until September 3, 2024.
In the first five months of 2024, foreign flight arrivals to Grand Bahama increased 8% compared to the same period in 2023, setting the stage for surpassing pre-Hurricane Dorian numbers this year.

Chester Cooper. “We are working hard to position the island to benefit from significant investment and growing tourism demand. We are continually exploring new markets and restoring service with local and international airlines.”
In June, Sunwing Airlines resumed direct flights from Montreal, Neos/Alpitour Airlines resumed direct flights from Milan, and Bahamasair resumed flights from Freeport to Orlando. In addition, Bahamasair has signed interline agreements with Virgin Atlantic and Alaska Airlines. These agreements provide seamless travel via Nassau for visitors from the UK and the West Coast. An upcoming agreement with Turkish Airlines in September will further expand travel options to Grand Bahama.
