Santo Domingo.- The National Bureau of Statistics recently released the “General Report of the Tenth National Population and Housing Census in 2022” (ONE).
According to the study, of the more than 3.6 million registered households living in the country, the vast majority (62.7%) (equivalent to 2,335,546 households) have access to water through aqueducts in their homes. However, water supply, especially in rural areas, remains a challenge.
While most households in urban areas have direct access to water through aqueducts, rural areas face difficulties in accessing water supply due to more limited mechanisms.
In urban areas, 62.7% of households get their water from aqueducts at home, while 10% of urban households get their water from their backyards and the remaining 5% get their water from public taps and other marginal sources such as springs or wells, which is a smaller proportion.
In contrast, the situation in rural areas is more complicated. Only 44% of rural households have access to aqueduct water at home, a significant gap compared with urban areas.
Apart from, 13.7% of rural households rely on public tap water, and 7.9% It gets its water from the terrace of the house. Natural sources like springs, rivers or streams are more common in these areas.
In this sense, the report also details the various sources of water used by Dominican households:
10% (about 372,000 households) use aqueducts on their terraces to get liquid, while 5% (equivalent to 187,655 households) use public taps.
As for the key of another house, it reflects only 1.5% around 56,000 houses and 0.8% around 30,000 houses. Spring water, river or stream: 1.3% 50,127 households. As for tube wells, their use rate is only 5.6%, or about 208,000 households.
Similarly, only 4.5% of about 167,000 houses are well dug. Rainwater harvesting accounts for 0.4%, trucks or tanks for 6.7% and other sources for about 45,000 households for 1.2%.
