In December 2016, Belarusian citizens Yuri Pavlovets, Dmitry Alimkin and Sergei Shiptenko were detained for preparing materials on the internal political and economic conditions in Belarus for several Russian Internet resources and media, including Regnum.

First, Regnum, as well as two authors of the Lenta.ru and EADaily websites, were arrested and detained: BSUIR teacher Pavlovets (published under the pseudonyms Pavel Yurintsev and Nikolai Radov) and a caretaker from Brest Alimkin (pseudonym Alla Bron). Then there was information about the detention of Minsk resident Shiptenko (pseudonym Artur Grigoriev).

Alimkin was charged with criminal acts provided for in paragraph 3 of Article 3. 130 of the Criminal Code (incitement to racial, national, religious or other social hatred or discord committed by a group of people), Pavlovets – in accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 3. 130 of the Criminal Code and paragraph 1 of Article 233 of the Criminal Code (illegal business activities), Shiptenko – in accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 3. 130 of the Criminal Code and paragraph 1 of Article 233 CC.

The fourth suspect, Yuri Baranchik, a Belarusian citizen and editor-in-chief of Regnum, was charged in absentia under Article 3 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Precautionary measures in the form of detention were chosen in absentia under Article 130 of the Criminal Code, and he was included in the interstate wanted list, although it is known that he is in Russia.
