Illegal border crossings decreased for the fifth consecutive month. Vice President Kamala Harris selected her running mate for the U.S. presidency. We are still awaiting implementation of President Biden’s executive action that would allow certain people married to U.S. citizens “parole,” which could allow them to apply for residency within the United States. This article will provide updates as we approach the presidential election season and prepare for the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
President Biden implemented a policy change at the border that made it harder for people to try to enter the United States and request asylum. That, combined with the summer heat, had a major impact on border crossings. Under Biden’s new policy, U.S. officials no longer have to ask migrants if they fear harm from deportation. Some of the most vulnerable groups, such as unaccompanied minors, can still apply for asylum, but the criteria for entering the United States are now stricter. This has significantly slowed asylum processing between ports of entry on the southern border. This has made many people less willing to make the long journey to the United States in the hot summer months.
We are already in August, and the presidential election will be held on November 5th of this year. There are less than 100 days left until we know who the next president will be. Harris has already chosen her vice presidential running mate and has begun a campaign tour in seven key states to try to expand her momentum and try to win over voters. Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, beat out two other potential candidates: Arizona Senator and astronaut Mark Kelly, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. All excellent candidates have potential influence on voters in important swing states. Tim Walz is a 51-year-old Democrat who served in Congress for 12 years and has served as the Governor of Minnesota since 2019. Walz’s impressive resume and popularity in the Midwest undoubtedly influenced his selection by Harris as Vice President.
Vice President Harris has raised a huge amount of campaign cash for her presidential bid. On Sunday, a new group called “Harris Republicans” organized to win over the votes of Republicans who dislike Donald Trump. The idea is to use well-known Republicans to run with Harris and win over undecided voters. As the campaign progresses this election season, the strategy will continue to use Trump’s controversial statements against him. Kamala Harris raised an impressive $310 million in July. His fundraising efforts and current momentum have revived the Democratic presidential race against Trump.
On June 18 of this year, President Joe Biden announced a new program in his administration that would allow certain qualifying spouses to obtain parole and lawful permanent residence (green cards). However, we have not seen the launch of this program. Although we are a law firm that can assist potential qualified applicants, we are still unable to apply. There are no instructions outlining the requirements, nor any requests that we can implement. We are hoping that this implementation will be achieved during the upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC). It is election season, and political considerations are important. The fact that a speaker at the DNC was able to mention the implementation would amount to favorable political capital. We know that our clients and the immigration community are eagerly awaiting the start of filing applications for this relief. Therefore, we are monitoring the likelihood of our clients filing applications and will keep readers of this article informed of developments on this matter. We also need to see which party wins the November 2024 presidential election to understand whether the program will be rescinded or allowed to continue.
