Identità flatly denied news reports that it had issued thousands of ID cards to foreigners, while confirming that it had conducted an internal investigation and passed the information to the police.

Identità issued a statement on Monday in response to a report in Net News that authorities had issued 18,000 fake ID cards to foreigners, with each card costing between €2,000 and €5,000.

The report also included recordings of two prisoners sentenced to six months in prison for possessing forged documents. Net News said that although they were ready to expose the mastermind behind the crime, they were denied the right to become whistleblowers.

The online news further alleged that people close to the cabinet members were also involved in the scam and that the cabinet itself was aware of the scam.

Identità said in a statement that its compliance and expatriate department had launched an investigation and passed information and evidence about “some individuals” to police for their investigation. It did not provide information about the evidence found.

Identità explained that its compliance department investigates any suspicions that arise following internal or external reports. The agency stressed that it does not tolerate any form of abuse and fully cooperates with the police.
