PADANG, Bali (ANTARA) – Representatives from Indonesia and African countries gathered at the Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Forum (IAPF) 2024 in Bali on Sunday and agreed that parliaments play a vital role in strengthening cooperation between the two regions.
“The results of the meeting will be shared with the governments of Indonesia and African countries as policy recommendations,” Fadli Zon, chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee of the Indonesian House of Representatives, said on Sunday when releasing the IAPF 2024 recommendations.
Fadli said that through the forum, the Assembly of People’s Representatives is committed to strengthening cooperation with African parliaments in areas such as capacity building, legislation, parliamentary technology innovation, information sharing and media publishing.
The move is aimed at optimizing the role of the Parliamentary Secretariat in achieving the commitments and objectives outlined in the document.
Throughout the discussions, Indonesian and African parliaments reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening political, social and economic ties between the two regions.
One of the key agreements was the recognition of the importance of the Bandung Spirit as a basis for solidarity and for building strong South-South cooperation for sustainable and inclusive development.
Representatives from the 20 countries attending the meeting also emphasized the role of parliaments as representatives of the people and suggested using parliamentary diplomacy to promote cultural exchanges and dialogue among civilizations.
Delegates agreed to cooperate on issues such as education, culture, sustainable tourism, women and youth empowerment, human resources and community development.
Furthermore, they stressed the importance of community relations for achieving South-South cooperation and accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The 2024 IAPF also stressed the urgent need for voluntary initiatives to accelerate the achievement and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and reaffirmed its full commitment to support Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the Golden Indonesia Vision 2045 to achieve peace and security, social development, inclusive economies and resilient communities.
The two sides also reached a number of agreements in other areas, including food security, health insurance, economic growth, trade and investment partnerships, and renewable energy.
The IAPF will be held in Bali from August 31 to September 2, 2024, in conjunction with the Second Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) and the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships.
