The president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Sebastian Coe, has responded angrily to Nestlé’s decision to stop sponsoring the organisation amid a corruption scandal and anti-doping concerns, saying he would not accept the Swiss company’s stance.

“Angry and shocked by today’s announcement about youth athletics. We will not accept this. It will be the children who suffer,” Coe said in a brief statement after Nestle announced it would stop sponsoring the IAAF Children’s Athletics Program, which involved a complaint against the entity.

“We have decided to end our sponsorship of the IAAF children’s programme with immediate effect. This decision was made in response to negative publicity surrounding corruption and doping allegations at the IAAF. We believe this could have a negative impact on our reputation and image.”

Since 2012, food industry giant Nestlé has been the main sponsor of the IAAF’s programs for children and young people around the world. According to international media reports, the contract is worth US$1 million (R$3.9 million at current prices) per year.
