“I shouldn’t be here, I should be dead,” Donald Trump told the New York Post in an interview on Sunday. “Whether it was luck or God, a lot of people said, thank God I’m still here,” he added, describing the swift intervention of Secret Service agents after the shooting and rolling up his sleeve to show reporters a large bruise on his right forearm.

Trump’s right ear was loosely bandaged during the interview. His team insisted that reporters not be allowed to take photos of the former president. “The doctor at the hospital said he had never seen anything like it, and he called it a miracle,” Trump said. The former president noted in the interview that he might have died if he had not turned his head slightly to the right to read a documentary about illegal immigration when the shooting occurred. If he hadn’t done that, the blow that tore off the tip of his ear would have been fatal.
