The Armenian Wrestling Federation has appealed against the wrestling final of Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan in the 98 kg category at the Paris Summer Olympics.
In the final of the 2024 Olympics, Aleksanyan competed with Iranian athlete Mohammad Hadi Al-Sarawi (bronze medalist, world champion, Asian champion, Asian Games champion), but he lost to his opponent 1:4 and won the silver medal.
Artur Aleksanyan, an Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist, four-time world champion and seven-time European champion, expressed hope that justice would be served.
“I came here for the gold medal, but you all saw what happened to me in wrestling matches. Once, an Iranian wrestler had both feet completely outside our wrestling zone and I told the coaches to appeal. In this case, they should have given me one point, but they gave two points to the Iranian wrestler and gave me one point as an appeal. I believe that point should have belonged to me. I was not nervous because this was my third and fourth time in the Olympic finals. It’s just that in competitions like this, even in the finals, even small details can solve serious problems,” said Artur Aleksanyan.
Nevertheless, Artur Aleksanyan stressed that he will continue his sports career despite the disappointment of the bias and injustice of the referees. “Yes, I am very disappointed with these injustices, but I will still continue wrestling. And the bias is not just happening to me. Slavik Galstian won cleanly; the referee recorded the victory, and he could have entered the final and won at least a silver medal, but today, Slavik did not get a medal because for some reason the result of the wrestling match was changed. The same happened today with Arsen Harutunyan. It feels like there is tension between our team. I know that an appeal has been filed. I hope that justice will be restored,” Aleksanyan said.
Karen Giloyan, Europe’s deputy minister for sports and computer systems, who is following the progress of the Paris Olympics, also said the government would participate in the appeal process.
“We are waiting for a written response, which will be attached to the complaint of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia and sent to the relevant court. I assure you that we will work hard to achieve justice,” said Karen Giloyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia.
At the start of the Paris-2024 competition, Aleksanyan led the South Korean player Kim Shin-jun by 9:0. In the quarterfinals, the Armenian wrestler faced the Uzbek representative and world runner-up Rustam Asakalov, 40, and won an impressive victory with a score of 9:5 by his willpower in the last seconds. In the semifinals, he won a brilliant victory over the Cuban player Gabriel Rusillo with a score of 5:3.
Armenia still won 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal at the 33rd Summer Olympics. Gymnast Artur Davtian also became the Olympic silver medalist, and Greco-Roman wrestler Malhas Amoyan won the bronze medal.
