St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Nevis Disaster Management Director Brian Dale said Tropical Storm Ernesto has already impacted the island.
Despite the heavy rain and strong winds, he expressed confidence that the storm would not cause serious impacts on infrastructure.
“We continue to experience strong winds with moderate to heavy rain. Strong winds are being reported around the entire island. Some trees have been blown down. However, shelters in Nevis are not open. We believe that Nevis’ housing stock is at the forefront in terms of building codes and building maintenance. Therefore, the impact of Tropical Cyclone Ernesto on our social sector should be minimal.”
Mr. Dale pleaded with everyone not to cross the street.
“We continue to monitor the progress of the storm and encourage people to stay off the streets as some streets are reported to be flooded. Flooding can cause debris to accumulate on streets and can cause vehicles to slip. We encourage people to stay home if possible and stay off the streets.”
The forecast says the strongest elements of the storm will pass by 5pm on August 13, but strong winds are expected to continue into the evening, with showers expected tomorrow. However, in terms of the storm’s passage, the strongest elements will pass by 5pm today.
The grid was affected in Hamilton and Gingerland, leaving those areas without power. Nevis Power said it would work to restore power once weather conditions improved.
