Hurricane Ernesto heads toward U.S. and Canada

Ernesto strengthened again into a hurricane on Sunday and moved north across the Atlantic, threatening winds and rain for the U.S. and Canadian coasts after striking Puerto Rico and Bermuda.

The center of the hurricane is expected to pass near the southeastern part of Newfoundland, Canada, on Monday evening, posing danger to residents and tourists along the Atlantic coast of North America along the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) path.

The agency added: “Swimmers should be aware that there is a significant risk of life-threatening waves and currents and should stay out of the water if advised by a lifeguard.”

Ernesto passed through Puerto Rico earlier this week, leaving more than 600,000 people without power, and made a direct hit on Bermuda on Saturday, knocking out power to more than 70% of customers before being downgraded to a hurricane.

Bermuda’s Minister of National Security Michael Weeks reported on Sunday that the British island “has overcome Hurricane Ernesto without loss of life or serious incidents,” the newspaper reported. Royal Gazette.

According to the latest report released by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 9:00 pm on Sunday, Ernesto has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and is once again classified as a Category 1 hurricane (out of five categories).

The weather department predicts that wind speed will increase during the night.

The National Hurricane Center added that Ernesto’s storm surge was affecting parts of the Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast and Atlantic Canada.

As the natural phenomenon is located more than 800 kilometres south of Halifax, Canada, there are currently no coastal alerts or warnings in effect.

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, has been very busy, according to the U.S. Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as high ocean temperatures have boosted the intensity of these phenomena.
