Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on social media on Monday that he had arrived in Beijing on Peace Mission 3.0 after recent visits to Moscow and Kiev.
Orban posted a photo of his arrival on social media.
China’s Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement that the Hungarian leader will meet with President Xi Jinping on Monday to discuss issues of common concern.
Orban was greeted at the airport by Hua Chunying, a representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has condemned the Hungarian prime minister’s participation in the Organization of Turkish States (OTS) summit in Azerbaijan last Saturday.
Brussels, EU member states, the United States and Ukraine expressed displeasure over the newly elected Hungarian prime minister’s visit to Moscow on Friday and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
EU officials condemned the surprise visit, saying it threatened the bloc’s common position on the war in Ukraine, and stressed that he was not representing Brussels in Moscow.
“Orban’s participation in the informal summit in Azerbaijan is another event where he does not represent the EU but only Hungary,” Borrell said.
“Hungary has not received a mandate to promote relations with the Turkish state organization,” the community’s foreign policy chief reiterated.
Orban has often drawn the ire of Brussels with controversial visits, but he has ignored all criticism.
