Huge spot appears on sun after powerful flare

On August 4, active region No. 3780 appeared behind the edge of the Sun. Its area is 1,000 units – one millionth of the Sun’s hemisphere. Therefore, the spot covers about 0.1% of the star’s visible surface.

This size cannot be called a record-breaking one, since in the history of observations, the largest sunspots have an area of ​​2-3000 units. However, scientists are still cautiously watching what is happening – soon this area will be equal to the Earth. Tentatively scheduled for August 9-10. The event could trigger a series of magnetic storms on Earth.
