Whether you went to work for the first time today, you went to work a few days ago, or the move is still waiting for you – it’s basically the same. Returning to work after the holidays is difficult for many people.
Psychiatrist Nevina Chalovsky Herzog says that most people’s first day at work after vacation is filled with a feeling of not being well-rested, and they’d rather continue on vacation than take on obligations.
People often complain that they feel powerless to influence their lives and find fulfillment in their work. When they go on vacation, many people often irrationally believe that when they return, everything will be like a fairy tale.
– Facing a reality that brings huge limitations and setbacks can make us feel frustrated and powerless – said Charovsky Hercog.
And the difference in what we eat during and after vacation can also affect mood. During free days and vacations, we have time to dedicate ourselves, prepare something delicious, and often eat light meals.
– Going to work puts us in a circle of: “Oh, I don’t have time to eat anything. I go to the first bakery. I don’t have time to make something, let me take it off my feet”. Then we get to the point where I eat very harmful and heavy food, which lowers our tone – Nutrition experts explain Veloslava Stankovic.
How long should annual leave last?
Everyone needs daily, weekly and yearly vacations, says Charofsky Hercog. The last one should last at least 10 weeks, preferably two weeks.
– We need time to break the continuity of our daily lives and adjust to new rhythms in order to enjoy our vacations and fully engage with our lives. – Emphasize psychiatrists.
In terms of nutrition, you should eat as much raw vegetables and fruits rich in minerals and vitamins as possible. It would be best if you add snacks to your three meals a day.
Green fruits and vegetables are rich in magnesium, which, as Stankovic says, has a big impact on mood and stress reduction. Magnesium affects more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, leading to muscle relaxation and regulation of heart function.
How to start after returning from vacation?
The end of the holidays and the return to reality should start with a slightly different diet. For an ideal breakfast, kefir, kefir or yogurt rich in fat to keep you full, cereal or granola and fresh seasonal fruit are enough.
– In this way, proteins, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins are introduced – said Stankovic.
Returning to work should be planned, rather than immediately being overwhelmed by unfinished work or new work that is uninteresting, burdensome, and unfulfilling.
Charovsky-Hercog said it was important to gradually and systematically resume the work rhythm, and people should not immediately start doing the most difficult work and tasks.
You should also allow for breaks of around 30 minutes during the day, which is enough time for your body to relax and recover.
– If you are stationary, take a short walk and move around. On the other hand, if you are doing some physically demanding work, sit down and rest. – Čalovski Hercog noted, adding that it is important to maintain a balance of two thirds: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours of other activities.
