The birth rate in Romania is falling and the number of premature births is increasing, the Association of Premature Babies warns after analyzing 2023 statistics.
The association also sounded the alarm about the increasing number of minors becoming mothers.
Official figures reviewed by the Premature Babies Association show 155,418 births in 2023, compared with 180,735 in 2021, with a “continuous decline in birth rates”.
Cities with the most premature births
The Premature Birth Association states:
– Minimum weeks of pregnancy – 22 weeks
– 25,887 babies born early
– The number of twin births was 2,970, down from 3,047 in 2022
– 48 triplet births, down from 58 in 2022
– 5,543 newborns born to mothers aged 40-50
Among the cities with the highest number of premature births, Bucharest topped the list with 2,900 premature babies, followed by Iaşi (1,462 premature babies), Cluj (1,019 premature babies) and Braşov (1,005 premature babies).
These demographic data reveal the fact that in the long term, societies will have an aging population and that an increase in the number of premature births is associated with significant risks during birth, prolonged hospital stays, increased costs for the public health system and families, risks of postpartum depression, but also risks for long-term neuromotor development associated with premature births. This requires careful monitoring of all stages of the child’s development, appropriate early interventions and long-term restorative treatments, which represent significant risks and costs for families”, says founder Diana Gămulescu Premature Birth AssociationAccording to one Communicated.
How many teenage mothers will there be in 2023?
The number of teenage mothers is worrying. In 2023, 6,284 girls under the age of 18 became mothers, of whom 627 were under the age of 15.
Therefore, the number of teenage mothers indicates that:
– 12 years – 27 babies
– 13 years – 104 births
– 14 years – 496 births
– 15 years – 1,114 births
– 16 years – 1,968 births
– 17 years – 2,575 births
In the same year, there were 3,608 newborns to 18-year-old mothers.
“In addition, the young age of adolescent mothers exposes them to the risk of maternal dropout, the risk of newborns being abandoned by maternity hospitals, high risks for mothers and fetuses at birth, and risks related to quality. Diana Gămulescu also conveyed her views on the care of newborns in the medium and long term.
